Clinical Research Unit Head

Dr Dawson is a Consultant Pulmonologist who leads our team at the CTBRI .He is an experienced tuberculosis clinician and his special interests include new drug development and developing standardized radiology reporting systems for patients with tuberculosis.

Dr Kim Narunsky
Research Scientist

Dr Narunsky is a medical doctor with extensive experience in primary health care and tuberculosis. She is well known and highly regarded in our local communities for her longstanding work in tuberculosis. She is responsible for the medical management of our clinical trials.

Dr Greg Symons
Clinical Researcher

Dr Symons is a consultant pulmonologist based at the CTBRI and Respiratory Clinic at Groote Schuur. His fields of interest include infectious diseases and the lung as well as the emerging field of multidrug resistant & extremely drug resistant tuberculosis.

Dr. Carolyn Whale
Clinical Researcher

After graduating from Stellenbosch University, Dr. Whale gained broad exposure in many disciplines and after working in the Respiratory Clinic at Groote Schuur, discovered her interest in TB and new drug development and joined the team at CTBRI. She is an invaluable part of the team and involved in the day-to-day running of our EBA unit.

Clinical Research Sister

Sr. Evreva is responsible for clinical trial recruitment and patient care. She has extensive experience in managing Phase III clinical trials.

Sr Jessica Phillips
Clinical Research Sister

Sr Phillips co-ordinates the recruitment and management of patients recruited for grant- funded academic research at the CTBRI. She currently manages a collaborative project with New York University looking at Longitudinal lung complications of patients on anti-retroviral therapy.

Clinical Research Nurse

E/N Isaacs assists us with the management of our EBA studies and outpatient studies as well ensuring ongoing patient follow-up at the UCT Lung Institute.

Nurse Nelson has extensive local knowledge of tuberculosis and is responsible for recruitment and patient care at the CTBRI and is a core member of our training and trial staff.

E/N Dywati’s experience in the TB field is invaluable to our ongoing TB drug development. She is responsible for recruitment and patient care in the EBA unit and for the ongoing Rifapentine collaborative project with Johns Hopkins University.

Unit Manager

The ever-efficient Debbie Carstens ensures that the CTBRI functions at its optimum, her attention to detail & thoroughness ensures that the CTBRI is one of the leading TB drug research facilities in South Africa.

Mr Sass is a valued member of our team responsible for co-ordination and transport of patients & staff as well as clinical trial samples. Furthermore, Mr. Sass’s skills as a carpenter & handyman are regularly put into good use in the unit.
