A Season of Honours for Pulmonology?

September 2011: “This must be the golden age of pulmonology at UCT” said Professor Bongani Mayosi, head of the Department of Medicine at a recent staff function. At the recent Annual Conference of the South African Thoracic Society held in Durban

  • Dr Richard van Zyl Smit, doctoral research fellow and honorary consultant, with members of the Lung Infection and Immunity Unit received the Best Publication for 2010 award for his paper entitled “Within-subject variability and boosting of T cell IFN-g responses following tuberculin skin testing” published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
  • Greg Calligaro, senior registrar and doctoral research fellow, received awards for the best abstract submitted and the best poster presentations for work on Metronome-Paced Tachypnoea, and Lung Function Changes in HIV-infected Cohort being Treated with Anti-retrovirals, respectively.
  • Dr Hoosain Khalfey, research fellow and honorary consultant, was awarded the GlaxoSmithKline Respiratory Research Fellowship.
  • Dr Brian Allwood, senior registrar and doctoral research fellow was awarded an AstraZeneca Research Award for his project on Tuberculosis-associated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; a 5-year follow-up of the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease project in Cape Town, South Africa.

Two other recent notable awards were:
