Director: Professor Eric D Bateman

Professor Bateman is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Cape Town and Head of the Division of Pulmonology at the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. He is the founder and Director of the University of Cape Town Lung Institute. He obtained his MBChB (1970) and Doctor of Medicine degrees (1984) at the University of Cape Town and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London - since 1986). He is a Fellow of the University of Cape Town (elected 2006) and an Honorary Fellow of the South African Thoracic Society which he has served as President for three terms. He is currently Chair of the Global Initiative for Asthma, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Alliance against Respiratory Diseases and serves committees of the American Thoracic Society. His research interests include the pharmacology and management of asthma, chronic obstructive airways disease and tuberculosis, and community-based interventions to improve the care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases. He has more than 180 publications and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He is a member of many professional societies, including the American and European Thoracic Societies and the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology.
