Board of Directors

Dr R Dawson – Head of Research Unit: Centre for TB Research Innovation, UCTLI

Professor E D Bateman – Professor of Respiratory Medicine, UCT (Executive Director) (alternate – Associate professor G. M Ainslie).

Mr P Grant – Assistant Director – Finance, UCT (alternate – Ms Hui).

Mr P Stewart – Chief Executive Officer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, SA. Representing the major founding donor Ingelheim Pharmaceutical.

Dr K Ho – Medical director, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, SA. Rep. Representing the major founding donor Ingelheim Pharmaceutical.

The Institute operates under direction of the Board, and is not subject to commercial influences of donors or clients, current or past.

The Institute is managed by the Management Committee comprising Prof E D Bateman (Managing Director and Chair), Prof P Potter, Prof K Dheda, Dr Richard van Zyl Smit, Dr R Dawson and Dr B Draper. There is an Institute manager (Mrs Cheryl Nel) and there are two financial advisors (Mr R Felder and Mr N Huppert).

The Finances of the Institute are managed by the Finance Committee who report to the Board of Directors. The Finance Committee comprises Mr Phillip Brits ( Financial Manager of Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals), Mr Peter Grant (Financial Manager at UCT), Prof Eric Wood (Graduate School of Business, UCT) and Prof E Bateman (Managing Director of the Lung Institute).

Company Structure of the Institute

The Institute is incorporated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of Cape Town, for educational and charitable purposes. The institute receives no financial support from the university or state, but is financed from grants, contract fees, proceeds from charges for services rendered, and donations. Surpluses are utilised for the activities of the institute in pursuant of goals.
